#753: Large Lift-Back Amputation Saw |
|
|
| A large lift-back capital amputation saw, in unplated steel with checkered ebony handle, marked LUER.
The back or spine of lift-back saws were used to stabilize the blade
during cutting; the spine lifts back to allow the blade to pass through,
completing the cut. Much smaller versions were used as metacarpal saws.
In an unusual feature of this saw, the teeth are angled to cut on the pull rather than the push of the saw. Good condition noting
darkening and light corrosion to blade. Measures 14 1/2" long x 2 1/4" wide. Luer was established in
in France in 1837. Ca 1850. Spine open; Close-up of Grip. $350 |
