A handsome and complete English cupping set by Down Bros. Put up in
a lovely flame mahogany case, the set contains a brass vacuum pump; a
mating brass stopcock; two cupping glasses - one with ground and polished pontil and one with integral brass mounting to accept the stopcock; a
large brass 12-blade scarificator marked DOWN - London; a brass spirit
burner complete with cap and wick; and a bottle with ground glass stopper
to hold alcohol for use in the burner. Both cupping glasses and the spirit
burner retain their original protective chamois covers. The case,
measuring 9" x 5 1/2" x 3 3/4", has brass fittings and a gold-plated
cartouche, and an ivory plaque inside engraved "DOWN BROS. Opposite Guy's
Hospital." All contents are believed to be original to the set with
the exception of the glass bottle which is a more recent replacement. The overall condition is very good noting slight dings and wear
consistent with age. The cups are free from cracks, chips and significant
scratches. The scarificator is in good working order with sharp,
bright blades; the spirit burner is fine; and the vacuum pump is good
noting surface scratches in the varnish as seen in the images. The lid of
the case closes nicely and the side catches still function properly.
