A good Fowler plaster phrenology
bust with embossed borders and paper labels indicating the various
sentiments, along with a companion self-instructor book on phrenology,
also by Fowler. The front of the bust is embossed with "PHRENOLOGI" and
the rear with "APPROVED BY O.S. FOWLER."
Standing about 10 1/2" tall, the bust shows normal wear but none of the
serious chipping and abrasion usually found on these. About 60% of the
paper labels are still present, although some of these have partial losses
as well.
The book has hard covers with gild lettering on brown fabric. The
condition is good. There are several small spots on the cover and light
bumping of the corners and spine ends. The title page has spaces for the
names of a study subject and the person marking the study. Both of these
spaces have names written in pencil. The charts of the following two pages
also have pencil entries indicating the findings for the subjects. The
remainder of the interior is clean and unmarked.
The publishing date and penciled date of the reading are both 1881.
