A complete and excellent amputation set by Codman & Shurtleff, Boston.
Ten instruments are included: in the top compartment a lift-back
amputation saw with ebony handle; a bone forceps and a spring-catch artery
forceps (both in unplated steel). In the main compartment a Petit style
tourniquet with nickel plated body; a long catlin knife; long and medium
length amputation knives; a scalpel; a tenaculum; and a metacarpal saw,
all with ebony handles. A period packet of suture needles is in a small
covered compartment. The compartment divider bears a fine maker's label:
CODMAN & SHURTLEFF SURGICAL & DENTAL INSTRUMENTS. 13 TREMONT ST., BOSTON.
The mahogany case and velvet-lined interior are immaculate. All
instruments are marked Codman & Shurtleff and are in very fine condition
noting only light discoloration here and there on the bone forceps, and
small areas of light corrosion on the artery forceps. The key is included.
Edmondson puts C & S at this address from 1857 to 1871. The nickel plating
of the tourniquet would place this set at the end of that period.
Case measures 13 5/8" x 4 3/4" x 3".
